Ceramic Earthenware Butter Dish

(2 customer reviews)

by Wendy Calder

I love Wendy’s two-tone earthenwares designs and I’ve stocked her mugs and jugs since I started. I asked her to make me a butter dish to go with them, and she created these beautiful large round butter dish designs for me which are really unusual and I love them.  Each one is made from red earthenware clay and features either cow parsley, dandelion or allium designs scratched into the clay using the scraffito technique. The dishes are thrown on the wheel and when they are leather-hard, a white slip is added and the design is done by sgraffito (scratching through to the clay). A handmade spiral nob is added to the lid. They are fired to 1160 to give a lovely toasty terracotta finish.

Dishes may vary slightly from images as each piece is handmade and unique. Every dish is made bespoke and average make time is 3 weeks.

Dimensions: Height 7cm x Width 15cm
Care: Dishwasher and microwave safe, however Wendy recommends hand washing them with care.

I received the butter dish as a gift and am delighted with it. The design is very attractive and also practical.

I bought this butter dish a few months ago and have been using it all summer, it’s the perfect size for keeping half a standard 250g pack of butter on the counter top (as much as I would use in a week – the other half stays in the fridge), the butter keeps well as there are no gaps between the dish and lid, and the design looks very nice in my kitchen.
