This was another thing I’ve had in my head for a while, a lovely breakfast in bed style tray woven in autumnal coloured willow. And Sarah Jayne who is a local weaver, created exactly what I had in mind. These large woven willow trays are so beautiful! I love the shape and the colours and the time and craftsmanship taken to make each one.
Each tray has been crafted from willow grown on the Somerset levels. Sarah Jayne used a mix of Old French (grey brown), Steamed Black Maul (dark brown), Flanders Red (red) and Dicky Meadows (grey green) willow to create the different colours you can see in this tray. They all have different soaking and preparation times, ranging from 4 days to 10 days of soaking fully submerged, then at least 24 hours to mellow before weaving. Once the willow is dry it is treated with a food safe walnut oil to nourish and protect it.
