I discovered the brilliant maker and lovely soul Agnes Becker, creator of We Are Stardust through a women’s business group I am part of, and I fell in love with her unique beautiful handcrafted watercolour prints. Agnes is both a scientist and an artist. She describes We Are Stardust as “a celebration of how we are all connected to each other and the universe around us. Many years ago when the universe was born stars exploded to make the elements of the earth. These elements are what make everything in the world – me, you, the sea, creatures big and small, the clouds and the stars.” She designs and illustrates beautiful cars and prints for people with wild natures, sophisticated minds, and loyal hearts. Each card and print captures a fact, story or curiosity, and when you give one of her prints or send one of her cards, you are giving someone a moment of wonder for the natural world.

There are only 14 of these copper limited edition gilded prints featuring the traditional “I love you to the moon and back” saying. Each print is hand finished with copper leaf and is therefore each is slightly different to the next. They make perfect Valentine’s gifts or gifts for someone special, and are also perfect for children’s bedrooms.  Each print is  labelled as “x/14”, signed by Agnes and comes with a matching greetings card.

Agnes is a wonderful mix of scientist and artist. As a child she used to imagine she was an explorer in a jungle gathering unusual animal specimens on mysterious tropical islands or discovering ancient civilisations. I’d draw maps of my explorations and collect strange stones, shells and flowers. At school she loved both art and science and studied them all the way up to age 18. She now spends most of her week working in the field of science communication, with some of the best scientific minds and the oldest research institutions in the country. But every Friday, she spends the day illustrating and designing at her home in St Albans.

We Are Stardust is a natural progression from her childhood imaginations. She first had the idea when she worked at the Science Museum and looked at the products in the shop all for people who love science. She wanted to create a shop for everyone who loves learning about the natural world, so she started We Are Stardust in 2013 as a shop for nature lovers and curious minds. In her words:

“Everything and everyone is connected. We are one, small part in this giant, amazing universe, the scope of which we can’t comprehend…We all rely on each other and on nature to survive and be content. So let’s look after each other, be compassionate, empathetic and kind…Experience the big, strong and loud as well as the small, delicate and quiet. Take care of the world around you, and the ones you love. We only have this life!”
